Philosophy and Approach to Psychological Treatment

My approach to helping clients is based on the assumption that people can and will make the right decisions for themselves if they are able to focus constructively on their options.  The assistance I provide is based on increasing one's awareness of options, developing personal and social resources to manage ones emotional life, and increasing one's overall sense of psychological well-being as an individual and within social relationships.  My work with clients tends to be short-term (4 - 20 sessions), goal-oriented counseling; we work together to assess the nature and extent of problems and to determine an appropriate course of therapy.
I am a member of and subscribe to the codes of ethical conduct of the following organizations:
American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)
      American Psychological Association (APA)
      Oregon Psychological Association (OPA)
Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy (AABT)

    Continuing Education

I am actively involved in several professional organizations through which I gain new information about individual, family, and marital therapy.  I am also a participant in a nationally based special interest group whose focus is research in marital assessment and therapy.  In addition, I participate in professional workshops and institutes to ensure that I am up-to-date on current practices in the field of psychology.  As a Licensed Psychologist (#1174) I meet the continuing education requirements mandated by the Oregon State Board of Psychologist Examiners.
